Data Visualization Driving Employee Engagement

The Changing Business Environment

data visualization for changing businessThe changes in today’s business world are more rapid, and the competition and nature of business is more global, than ever before. At the same time, large parts of the workforce are widely spread.

This creates greater pressure for the companies in any industry to double check their business strategy and to constantly make sure they are fit to offer the best possible customer experience.

Any changes to existing strategy, execution, or the launch of a new strategy, requires strong employee engagement.

Keeping employees informed with relevant and engaging communication has real data visualization with key performance indicatorsimpact on bottom line results. Companies that are effective in communication are 3.5 times more likely to outperform their peers.[1]

This is not an easy task as there are many challenges to today’s internal communications. The two biggest challenges are:

  1. Cutting through the noise - The biggest challenge for internal communications teams is managing the information overload. The sheer volume of information to handle on a daily basis is overwhelming.

  2. The reach - Even though we have many devices (laptops and smartphones) that we can use for communication, it is hard to make sure we can reach all employees, blue collars as an example, well enough. It is hard to gain the buy-in from employees if they cannot be reached.

Smart Enterprise - The Digital Workplace

data visualization for internal communicationAccess to business-critical information and real-time collaboration are the foundational parts of the Smart Enterprise.  Internal communication, within the Smart Enterprise, is all about context.

To be able to cut through the noise and overcome the information overload, the messaging needs to be in context in terms of relevance; Time, Location and Target.

The top management need to build the correct communications infrastructure for the Smart Enterprise to overcome the above mentioned challenges. This requires:

  1. Ubiquitous access and a real-time view of the information that highlights the current status of the business.

  2. This information needs to be in a visual form where the essence is understood with a glance; we call this data visualization.

  3. Even better, the future Smart Enterprise works in a way that the relevant business information will find the right people, not the other way around, as we are used to.

...As soon, nobody will want to search for relevant business information anymore.

Real life example - Visualized Salesforce Data on Digital Signage

Building the communications platform and making relevant data, located in different business applications, visually available to support the Digital Workplace of the future might sound like it is a lot to take on. A step-by-step approach might be a smart start.

Salesforce, as an example of a relevant business application, is the worldwide leading CRM[2] service provider. Salesforce’s Customer Success Platform collects and consolidates more and more relevant and strategic data from around the business.

Even though the service can be easily accessed by those with login credentials, for a general user it can be hard to form a high-level picture of activity throughout the organization.

Furthermore, the set of employees that don’t access Salesforce on a daily basis (some of whom may not have a company device to access online services with) can’t engage, or benefit from the valuable store of information that is Salesforce.

Here is a snapshot example of what visualized Salesforce sales pipeline data can look like.

 data visualization with Salesforce

This service, along with interesting visuals from HR, CSR or Internal communications, can be running on the corporate Digital Signage networks. Put this information together and it will tell a story of what is happening within the enterprise at any given moment.

Here is an example of Salesforce data including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that can be visualized.

Being able to see the high-level, real-time status of the important KPIs across the organization, from Sales to Delivery to Support, will empower effective decision making at all levels. At the same time it will create a sense that we employees are all in this together.

This will fuel engagement and drive action in a completely new way.

The Era of Context-Aware Business Information

To be an effective and winning organization, the key for internal communications is to make sure to build and cultivate a culture of community and information sharing. This begins with the top management as they need to lead the initiative by building the communications platform for the Smart Enterprise - the digital workplace of the future.

This is needed to support effective internal communications in the era of Context Aware Business Information.
