Who Is Piet Mondrian and What Is Neo-Plasticism?
Piet Mondrian, born in the Netherlands in 1872, was a Dutch painter of abstract art. His paintings over the years transformed from a degree of abstraction with vivid colors to fully abstract grid based paintings that contained straight thick black lines that created squares and rectangles and the use of only primary colors, red, black, blue, yellow, and white.
These types of paintings became known as Mondrianesque art, or a movement he coined "Neo-Plasticism."
Mondrianesque art is characterized by:
- using only geometric shapes and ignoring form and color
- no curves, circles, or diagonals, must be horizontal and vertical lines only
- there should be no symmetry, striving for asymmetry is key
- bold primary colors should be used.
The theory or meaning behind the art is one of "new art." A quick premise being that plasticity is the condition of stuff that can be formed into other stuff. Painting was referred to as plasticity in the late 1800s. By calling it Neo-Plasticism, that was Mondrian's rejection of plasticity, it should be "new art."
He believed by creating a pure art form, the harmony of this simplified art would help stir up harmony in a chaotic and impure world.
It was revolutionary and has been an influence in a lot of architecture and design as the years have passed. It is even said to be the precursor to minimalism.
